Funabashi Dai-jingu (an ancient, official Imperial Shinto shrine) presents the annual "Great Sun Kami" festival which will be presenting sacred Kagura dances, and an amateur Sumo wrestling tournament on October 20th. The shrine is devoted to Amaterasu O-mikami, the Sun Goddess.

We'll travel old back lanes where great lords, ladies & shoguns lived, along the sando (sacred road) to explore this old & beautiful shrine, parts of which are so ornate & colorful, like seeing the world-famous site, Nikko, in Tochigi-ken!

Enjoy the festivities, glorious shrine colors, the drums, flutes & sacred, beautiful, but sometimes hilarious ancient Kagura dances which may remind some of equally ancient Balinese dances!

There will probably be an amateur outdoor Sumo wrestling tournament being held to honor the Sun Goddess, PLUS, we can try to catch the delicious blessed mochi-rice cakes which will be flung into the audience. It's usually very exciting!

Also known as "Oohi-jinja", this wonderful Shinto shrine, also features the only surviving wooden lighthouse dating from the Edo-period which once guided many boats safely into the port of Funabashi.

It is said the name of the river ("Ebi", meaning "shrimp" in Japanese) comes from the fact that shrimp caught in this river were served to Minamoto no Yoritomo (the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, from 1192 to 1199), when he visited Funabashi long ago.

Carved, forged & cast iron, stone & bronze structures depicting scenes of Funabashi can be seen on the railings of lovely bridges across the Ebi River, easing the hearts of people who cross over them.

"Oohi" means: "Great Sun Kami" & this ancient shine, (founded around 110 AD) is a legitimate branch of one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines, Ise-Jingu!

History of Oohi Jinja Shrine (Funabashi Daijingū Shrine)
When Prince Yamato-takeru-no-mikoto went to pacify the eastern provinces in the reign of Emperor Keikō (A.D. 110), he prayed here to Amaterasu-sume-ōmikami for success & for the people suffering from a drought, there was a manifestation of divine favor. That was the beginning of this shrine.

During the reign of Emperor Reizei (1053-1058), Minamoto no Yoriyoshi & his son Yoshiie repaired the shrine. During the reign of Emperor Konoe in the Ninpei era (1151-1154) Minamoto no Yoshitomo rebuilt the shrine.
During the Kamakura era "Saint" Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1282) gave the shrine a prayer for fasting so that the teachings of his school would prosper, along with a mandala & sword.

In the Meiji period, whenever Emperor Meiji (1852-1912) made a visit to Narashino and Sanrizuka he sent an imperial envoy with an offering to the shrine.
Funabashi Oohi-jinja is a true branch of Izumo-Taisha!
