Make your own Zabuton (Japanese traditional cushion) Workshop
Recently, more and more families are living in modern apartments and the number of traditional Japanese tatami rooms are decreasing, resulting in the needs for futons and zabutons (cushions) made from real cotton to lessen. At this event, we welcome you feel the difference between the real zabutons and the ones that are made using cheap synthetic fibers and to see the traditional technology that has continued for over 150 years.
A craftsman will give a demonstration on how the zabutons are made, and after understanding the craftsmen’s commitments and warmth of handmade, the participants will make their own mini-zabutons.
The craftsman will do the finishing touches, so no need to worry if you are not good at sewing!
Other small items using futon fabric will be on display, so you can feel them and if you’d like, you can choose a small article and design of your choice to order your very own item!
＜What you can experience＞
・Learn the history and differences between futons and zabutons.
・Make your own mini-zabuton to take home! Suitable to put watches, keys, and other small items.
・Looking at the small articles made by the craftsmen, the participants will discuss what kind of items they would like made.
【Instructor Profile】
Ikuo Tagami
Owner of Sasaya Shoten, which was founded in 1860. The founder, Iwakichi Tagami worked as a craftsman for "Sasaya", which was the tailor for Echigoya (the current Mitsukoshi). Afterwards, he set up his own shop and started his business. He then moved to Nagareyama City, and received tailoring orders for "Mikawaya" which was known to be the best in Nagareyama. His first class skills were handed down from generation to generation, and currently to fifth generation Ikuo. https://sasa-ya.jp/
